- During birth, baby’s 20 primary teeth are already present in the jaws. They typically begin to appear when the baby is between 6 months and 1 year.
- Most children lose their baby teeth in the following order:
- Baby teeth typically fall first at about 6 years when the incisors, the middle teeth in front, become loose.
- Molars, in the back, usually fall between ages 10 and 12 years and permanent teeth erupt by about 13 years of age.
Why are baby teeth important?
- Baby teeth are very important for your child’s health and development. They help them in performing several activities such as chewing, speaking and smiling. They also organise space in the jaws for permanent teeth that are growing under the gums.
- As per dentists, 30% of their patients experience premature loss of baby teeth.
Common causes of early tooth loss
- Tooth decay
- Accident/fall
Consequences of early loss of baby teeth
- When baby teeth are lost too early, permanent teeth can drift into the space, making it difficult for permanent teeth to find room when they come in.
- This can make teeth look crooked or crowded because of limited space.
- Hence, starting early with good oral care of your child can help protect their teeth for decades to come.
